A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots – Marcus Garvey

History is a popular and successful department at the Academy.  In 2019, when students last sat formal exams, 51.4% of pupils in England got Grade 5 or above: ASFA’s figure was 79%. 63.4% of pupils in England gained Grade 4 or above in History GCSE while ASFA students achieved 95%.

If students work hard at home and in school, they will achieve success at GCSE and make excellent progress.

The GCSE History course builds on student’s prior learning from years 7-9.  A high-quality history education will help students gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. Students will be inspired to ask questions about the world, to critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement, all of which are valuable life skills.

History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.
