The Underground Railroad – Colson Whitehead
When and where did you read this book?
I read this first back in 2018 while on holiday in Cyprus
How many times have you read it?
I’ve read it twice now, and trying to find time to read it again in the light of George Floyd and the BLM movement.
Who or what introduced you to this book?
I think it was showcased in Waterstones when I was browsing around for books to take on holiday.
Can you give a brief outline of the book?
The book tells the story of two 19thC slaves in the Southern states of America, who try to escape from their owners and get to the North by a series of safehouses, secret routes and railway.
What made you choose this as your favourite book?
I found myself completely immersed in the story. I spend some time living in the Southern United States and I am always amazed at how little things have changed in some areas, even now. The book really puts you in the middle of the slaves struggle to survive, and you invest in their lives and dreams.
Are there any other books by the author you would recommend?
The Nickel Boys is another great book,, set in a reform school in Florida in the 60’s. It’s a tough story, but worth it!
What other books did you consider before choosing this one?
I love “The Magus” by John Fowles, To Kill a Mockingbird, the John Le Carre Smiley books, and anything by Nick Hornby, but this book made such an impact I had to choose it.
What book(s) are you currently reading?
I’m re-reading 1984 by George Orwell – a warning from history!
